I am a licensed firearms owner, hunter, sport shooter, and rural property owner who depends on firearms to feed and protect my family. I strongly support measures to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, but taking responsible Yukoners’ property away will not do anything to stop gangs in Toronto, and I have written a number of nationally-published columns regarding this key issue over the years.
I am actually one of only three Yukoners who has filed a Section 74 Firearms Act court challenge to stop the Liberals from prohibiting my lawfully acquired personal property, through their May 1 2020 Order in Council. I have also called out the hypocrisy of the Yukon government purchasing the same firearms for wildlife protection that Justin Trudeau says have no use in Canada.
Despite the contortions of the Conservative Party faithful to justify Leader Erin O’Toole’s recent flip-flop on the party’s firearms policy, make no mistake it is a betrayal. The party’s platform was very clear that it would START by repealing Bill C-71 and the May 1 OIC, and THEN update firearms legislation. Erin O’Toole has now reversed this position, changed his platform after the fact, and failed to stand up for responsible gun owners.
